I was rewatching an old Philip Sayce video:
Of course the video is rife with comments that he’s just trying to rip off SRV. I’ll give them that the influence is apparent, though I hear some other technique and influence in there, too (I’m hearing some Eric Johnson and Satch in there)
These comparisons will always be made. People immediately compare it to stuff like this from Stevie:

But back up 15 seconds and listen to his slower, hardcore bends:

Back then, old timers heard that and automatically compared it to Albert King. I’ve always like to say that SRV got his bending technique directly from Albert. Example:

And even then, you could claim he ripped off the entire idea of bending strings from Lonnie Johnson:

And I’m sure you could claim Lonnie stole the entire idea of playing guitar from somebody else.
My point here? We all “steal” a bit from the people who influence us. The problem for the last 20-30 some odd years has been that SRVs shadow is so absolutely staggering, we’re having a hard time getting anybody out from under it. He really set a standard that we need to stop comparing against.
And don’t even get me started on the “SRV ripped off Hendrix” BS. If you really think that, go listen to some old Buddy Guy stuff.
